Punk & Alt-Rock Mixing Guide for Logic Pro

Tight, bright, punchy punk and alternative rock mixes using only the plugins already inside Logic Pro.

Most mixing advice is either generic enough to be useless, or written for whatever plugins the author is selling. This is neither.

This is one engineer's actual signal chain, on one specific genre, using only what Logic already ships with.

Start with the part people find most useful

Compressor picks per drum piece, not per drum bus:

  • Kick: Studio VCA or Studio FET
  • Snare: Vintage FET
  • Snare sample (reinforcement): Vintage VCA
  • Toms and overheads: Platinum Digital
  • Hi-hat: Vintage Opto

Platinum Digital on overheads is the one that surprises people. It is transparent enough that you are shaping rather than coloring, and the overheads are usually the most honest picture of the kit you have.

Three things in here that you will not read anywhere else

Your left and right rhythm guitars should not have identical EQ curves. Hats sit on one side of the kit, so you darken the opposite guitar to avoid the two fighting for the same space. It also widens the image. Two different curves, on purpose.

Kick and bass never hit a reverb bus. They ground the low end of the track. The second you put them in a room, the whole mix floats and goes soft.

Auto gain off on every compressor. Every single one. If Logic makes that decision for you, you lose your reference point for how hard you are actually compressing.

What is inside

11 sections covering drums, bass, guitars, vocals, send buses, master bus, order of operations, quick fixes, a mix-to-taste guide, and a glossary.

Exact EQ for every stem. High-pass and low-pass points, where the cuts live, where the presence lives. Taken from real mixes, not invented.

A two-stage vocal chain, Studio FET into Vintage Opto, with reduction targets for each stage.

The full master bus, with an EQ curve, compressor settings and limiter configuration including True Peak.

Panning mapped to an audience-perspective kit, and a console layout you can copy in five minutes.

A companion board in your Eden library, laid out by instrument so you can keep it open beside Logic while you work.

Who this is for

You mix punk, alternative, hardcore, grunge, emo or heavier rock in Logic Pro, and you have real recordings to work with. You want your songs to sound like records, not like bedroom demos.

If you mix in another DAW the principles still hold, but every plugin name in here is Logic's.

One honest note

This is a guide, not a template file you drag in. That is deliberate. A template teaches you nothing about why the numbers are what they are. Everything here is meant to be rebuilt in your own session until it becomes second nature.

An hour of someone else's studio time costs more than this. Buy it once and it is yours, including every future version.

About Audio Parkour

Audio Parkour

I am a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer. Vocals, guitar, bass and real drums, across punk, alternative, metal and progressive rock. I built this guide because there is surprisingly little information on getting solid punk and alt mixes using only Logic, and less still on doing it with stock plugins. I learned the craft in person from engineers with far more experience than me, and this is the chain I actually use on my own records.

Questions

Do I need third-party plugins?

No. Everything in this guide uses Logic Pro stock plugins. That is the entire point. The only thing you need installed is Logic.

Is this a Logic template file I can drag in?

No. It is a guide, and that is deliberate. A template you drag in teaches you nothing about why the numbers are what they are. Everything here is meant to be rebuilt in your own session until it becomes second nature.

What genre does this cover?

Punk and alternative rock, with the guitar and drum treatment applicable to hardcore, post-hardcore, grunge, emo and heavier alternative. If you are mixing clean pop or acoustic singer-songwriter material, this is not the guide for you.

I am new to mixing. Is this too advanced?

The guide opens with the philosophy and includes a glossary, so the terms are covered. That said, it assumes you can open the mixer window and place a plugin. If you have never touched a compressor, this will be hard going.

What do I get, exactly?

The full written guide plus a companion board in your Eden library that mirrors it, laid out by instrument so you can keep it open beside Logic while you work.

Will I get updates?

Yes. The current version is 4 and it will keep being updated. Buyers get every future version at no extra cost.

What if it does not work for me?

Every setting in here is a starting point, and the guide tells you which ones depend most on taste. If you follow it and your mix is genuinely worse off, email me and I will refund you.
